I was lucky enough to see Karen Ernst at a workshop at Dowling College this
summer. My thoughts about drawing, sketching and other art work was more along
the line of revision. The students would visualize, write, then draw, sketch,
paint, etc. Then they'd begin revising, looking at the art work. I think the
details most children add to their drawings will enable them to slow down their
writing, show it without saying it, and all of the other writing strategies we
try to teach in our daily minilessons.
