I haven't done Debbie Miller's lesson but I did introduce my students to schema
using Frank Asch's book Moonbear's Skyfire. We discussed why Moonbear though
he the sky was on fire because he had never seen a rainbow before (it wasn't
part of his schema). Towards the end of the story, Moonbear's friend bird
finds "gold" at the end of the rainbow inside a tree truck. I had students
make a prediction on what they thought the "gold" might be. One thought it was
honey. When the prediction came true, we discussed how he knew it could be
honey. He answered that he knew that honey can be sometimes found in a tree
after the bees had made it. We discussed the reason he knew that could
happen---it was in his schema. Then we went around and discussed certain
things and how we knew them because it was in their schema. (example: it was a
student's birthday and we discussed how he might be blowing out candles. Then
how we knew that would happen because it's in our schema). I feel like I'm
rambling so I hope this makes sense.
