The reading specialists in my district are preparing a year-long staff development experience on comprehension strategies based on Tanny McGregor's fabulous book, Comprehension Connections. We have pretty much plotted out the year, with a strategy introduced?each month at a?staff meeting,?but next month we have an inservice presentation to do that will be attended by most of the elementary teachers, but not all. So...we are wondering what we can do in about 60-90 minutes that would be valuable, but would not "leave some teachers behind" if they missed the session.
I am thinking about a model lesson to demonstrate the Gradual Release of Responsibility model. We will not have time to do this specifically while introducing the other strategies. I am also thinking of a focus on questioning or inference, since those are the strategies that I feel help us most on our... I hate to say this...state tests. I would appreciate any suggestions.
