The conference was by Bev Bain through the Bureau of Education and Research.
She is a recently retired teacher from California and a fabulous presenter.
She didn't tie that quote to any specific research, but throughout the day
constantly referred to all of the big names in literacy and impressed me
with her thorough knowledge of literacy. Obviously we aren't talking about
having learning support students reading Moby Dick, but I believe that if a
student really wants to read a book we should not discourage them just
because it isn't on their "level". That is more of an instinct as a
teacher, not necessarily tied to current research, although I am curious if
there is research to support this notion, so if anyone knows of any, please
let me know.
I know that some administrators don't accept our instinct, thankfully mine
respects my experience and knowledge enough to allow me to sometimes go with
my gut. I think I'll go to work and thank him tomorrow!
Mary
