Our district uses it primarily as an indicator of growth. We use the Fountas and Pinnel to identify just right books. We found that the DRA incorporates too much writing to soley assess the reading comprehension and understanding. The Fountas and Pinnel allows those students who struggle with the writting piece to have their comprehension assessed more effectively. However, I suggest that you use a multitude of assessments - include running records as well...

Do you use the assessment to identify just 'right' levels by finding the exact 'independent level' or do you use it to find instructional and then focus 'instruction' accordingly? A bit of a problem in our area. We have 'no kids left behind....most of our fourth and fifth graders are in the range of 34 (lowest grade four to fifty in grade five).
