I thought some of you might like to join Jim Burke's English Companion site (ning, whatever that is). They are starting a discussion of Kelly Gallagher's book which purports that schools are killing reading. Kelly was a leader in the South Basin Writing Project I attended a few years back. He has site where you can few his other thoughtful books on reading. This group probably needs some of our elementary school perspective to add to the secondary school discussion.

You can access the "Readicide" Book Club page several ways: The drop-down menu for "Notes/Events" has a link that will take you straight there; you can click on the link on the Main Page at the top; or, given its inevitable popularity, you can click on the link on the Main Page under Groups where the page will remain visible most of the time. Very eager to learn from Kelly, his book, and everyone who joins the book club discussion.
