Will you list some other suggestions from her book? I have Book Chats
on Friday's students have a few minutes (2-3 minutes) to talk about
their book. I have chat guidelines so it goes quickly. This way
everyone can share. It takes about an hourThey can read a passage if
they wish and they recommend it to people in the class that they think
would like it. This really helps.

Totally agree with this. You really have to pump up the books. I am
reading the
book whisperer by donnalynne miller (not sure on first name) who is
a 6th grade
teacher. Also have them discuss what they are reading in class if
you don't have
enough/alot of time just do it for like 5 minutes. Miller also gives
her
class time to read their books in class. Also talk about your
reading since you
are the "mentor" they hav for reading. I have the same problem with
my students
in 2nd/3rd grade and will be trying some of Miller's suggestions
this year
because reading at home is essential for becoming better readers.
