I used to keep samples of student work in a drawer of my file
cabinet. I regularly would just add work that was typical of the
students, or things that were either outstanding or puzzling....
anything that would show the students' ability, potential, or needs.
All these portfolios were not "standard" in that they did not all
contain the same work samples, but one thing I did for those simple
portfolios was a monthly short writing sample and a monthly drawing
sample (draw yourself, usually), and I made sure that there was an
assortment of math work included. I did not use these for grading....
frankly, my grading came right out of my head, as I knew my students
very well from conferencing and reading with them, as well as
informal and ongoing math chatting, but I used them during student/
parent conferences (students attended and took an active part in
conversations about their work).

This was very easy to do, took no extra time, and gave a good
overview of students' growth.

Hello,

 We are having a debate at work and I need help from those that  know more
than me, which is everyone on this list.

My colleagues and I were discussing summatives and how second graders
shouldn't have any summatives, but a lot of formatives that address
different skills.

My question is if this is true, then where do you get a grade from,
especially if you don't have standardized tests?

Any help will be very beneficial.
