The past week has continued to be very good for migrants at both Carver Park
Reserve and Rapids Lake MVNWR. Warbler species totaled 20, 20, 16, 20, and 22
on May 13, 14, 15, 17, and 19 respectively at Carver Park the past week. At
Rapids Lake on May 16 I saw 20 warbler species and on May 18 saw 23 warbler
species. Besides a significant arrival of thrush on May 14, migration appeared
to be at a bit of a standstill until May 17-18. I saw my first Alder and
Willow Flycatcher on May 17, and today there were 3 Pewee after seeing single
birds on two days last week(possibly the same bird). I saw 5 vireo species
this week but did not see any Red-eyed until today when there were 4. Thrush
numbers have been good with a total of 12 Veery, 24 Gray-cheeked , and 40
Swainson's for the week. Migrant sparrow were still moving through with more
White-throated Sparrow arriving to Carver Park on May 17(none that I could find
today) and a high count of 11 Lincoln's Sparrow also on May 17 at Carver Park.
Today(and yesterday) there was a significant decline of Yellow-rumped Warbler
with a count of ~140 on May 17 and only 9 that I could find today. Today
brought my first Orchard Oriole of the year, a first year male. Warbler for
the week were Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Blue-winged, Golden-winged,
Black-and-white, Prothonotary, Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Nashville,
Connecticut(May 13 and 18), Mourning, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart,
Cape May, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Bay-breasted, Blackburnian, Yellow,
Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, Palm, Pine, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green,
Canada, and Wilson's.
