business, and do so to make money. They lock out unauthorized AIM-clone clients
because that service is free, subsidized with ads, and they don't want someone
else using their network for free.
This discussion overlooks the fact that there are alternative IM services.  My situation (AOL subscriber, BTW) is  that I have several Yahoo friends in Australia/Far East and want to know when they are available, along with my AIM friends who are exclusively US.  No,  I do not want to load multiple chat clients simultaneously.
