Trying the same install of cygwin on windows 64bit I get the error I
had before

This error is nothing to do with mpir , it's either windows or cygwin
being strange.

Bill , when you did your cygwin was it on 32 or 64 bit windows?

Before I got this error on 32 and 64 bit windows , and even deleting
and reinstalling didn't help , and then suddenly the 32bit windows
started working , I think I wont check for any cygwin updates , as I
do need a working cygwin
