During the weeeklong deluge that hampered gardeners in
the city, I was working at a friends farm in Anoka.
I don't own a car so I would take a bus to Northtown
Shopping Center where my friend would pick me up at
5:45am.
The number ten bus leaves the Leamington Ramp in
downtown and ambles the Mall picking up its first
contingent of riders, mostly bleary eyed Latinos on
there way north for work on Central Avenue and in
Fridley. There were probably ten percent
Anglo-Americans. Gave me a chance to pass out Spanish
written flyers for a solidaity march this past
Saturday to protest yet more police shootings under,
shall we say, unclear circumstances.
But that's another story!
Working on John's farm and at the Farmers Market makes
me wonder how city politicians run under the DFL
banner with no farm experience. I think it was Nellie
Stone Johnson of whom David Brauer wrote a biography
who said something like she didn't trust a politician
without some farm background.
Come to think of it I wonder how many local DFLers
have experience as laborers?!
What I don't get is how these labor unions give
blanket endorsement to local pols who care about as
much for working people at the low end of the scale as
I don't know what.
Come on. These people think $9.02 is a living wage. I
don't get it. I would really like to know what the
candidates will be able to do for people in the "old"
economy rather than in the "new" economy of internet
consulting and dot.com high flying.
