Looking at the maps, for me, it looks too broken up whereas the
lines should be connected from St. Cloud to Hastings with stops at
Minneapolis and Saint Paul...no transfers.
That would be good for Hobos, only one train to catch (LOL)!
It's possible for the same train to run from St.Cloud through
Minneapolis and St.Paul to Hastings. The advantages to that operating
plan are limited though, as very few riders would ride that train the
entire length of the route and benefit from not having to transfer.
In terms of capital investment there is no advantage to the longer
route, as a train that leaves Red Wing at 6 am would get to the other
end of the line (St.Cloud) at 8:30 am, too late to make another
morning commuter run.
There is a major disadvantage to the long route- a delay
between, say, St.Cloud and Minneapolis would make that train late all
the way too Red Wing. By running separate trains over the Northstar
and Redrock lines a delay on one line will not affect the other.
I think it looks lacking in the south area by 494...could have a
rail going from Hastings, Saint Paul, Eden Prairie to the lake area.
I don't think we'll ever see rail along that part of the 494
corridor- there are no existing tracks along that route and no right
of way space to put tracks. A commuter rail system for this metro
area will ultimately be very much a hub and spoke system because
that's the way the railroads developed.
