Hello, and welcome! I am not one of the lead developers, so take my
opinions with a grain of salt. But I do think I have a pretty good handle
on thins, so here's my take:

We are rapidly approaching release of 2.0, so bug fixes right now would be
a most welcome thing, and that's one of the best ways to start getting
familiar with the code, anyhow. For a good list of bugs to consider, try:

After the release of 2.0, that's when new projects might seem more
interesting, in my opinion. But you should discuss your ideas here first
if you have thoughts of having your worked merged into the main code
eventually - there are some types of projects that are probably less likely
to be accepted, others where there might already be some clear ideas about
how the work should proceed, etc.
