Checking everything mentioned there, all seems correctly set up, from using the "nopat" kernel parameter, having the card's memory listed correctly in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to having the correct line in /proc/mtrr. After all, the card _never_ gave problems like the ones mentioned, it runs very stable and performs well, although I use a "slightly" newer driver and kernel. fglrx 12.43 (if I could gather that correctly) and kernel 3.3.2. Funny, it's kind of difficult to find out the driver's version - they hide it quite thoroughly everywhere one might look, the only hint I could find is listed in a /proc/ file. It took me some time to get it working in conjunction with the version 3 kernel, also, as there were some incompatible kernel modifications at some point that broke the module build. Fortunately, I could locate some patches, and one of them did work, although it was quite difficult to apply.
