Thank you Ed!!! I was just working on my reply too...

I have a great many opinions about Novell and I have just as many or more
for Nix and MS. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one. I could
rant on and on about how poorly Novell does this or that and I could rant
about how poorly MS does this or that. The fact of the matter is this; I
get paid to keep servers running, I get paid to build a reliable, scalable
network, and I get paid to make thoughtful decisions on the future of a
network.

Now Gordon, you can rant on and on about reliability, stability and the File
and Print services of Novell. I could easily rebut that with how reliable
MS has been for me over the last few years. Reliability does NOT come from
the vendor and their software. Reliability comes from the Engineer or
Admin. A network is only as good as the people working on it. I haven't
had a server under my control crash in 5 years, yet at my current place of
employment (where we do have Novell servers running, not for long I might
add), I have seen all of the Novell servers here (8 in all) crash at least
20 times due to one thing or another and I've only been here 3 months. That
is an unacceptable amount of downtime and I don't see Novell functioning any
better than NT or Nix. Even though I haven't worked on a Novell server in 4
years, I expect a great deal out of my network performance and I don't see
it happening as long as I have Novell, NT and Solaris on my network.

When I am done here I will have W2K AD and Solaris... That will be all,
Novell will be a thing of the past as I have no need for it. It provides no
functionality that I can't get anywhere else.

There's your stupid ass opinion you so wanted from me Gordon. Are you happy
now? Maybe if Novell hadn't dropped the ball they'd still be on top.
Unfortunately, they did and within the next five years, they'll be lucky to
be around.

I think it boils down to Gordon wanting to get into a technical knowledge
pissing contest.

If we begin to list the reasons why Novell quote "sucks" then we will just
keep getting retorts in defense of Novell. I don't think any of us have time
for that crap.

Want an educated opinion? Try it and see what you think about it. (which he
did). Opinions are not a resource for factual information. An educated
opinion is a damn oxymoron. You can get opinions from educated and
uneducated people. So what is the validity?
If this person was asking for facts instead of opinions, then that is a
different story. However if I were looking for facts I would be looking in
the direction of an established author that has viable resources to backup
his facts. Not an open discussion list.

Sean asked for opinions. That is what he got. Are you (Gordon) here to
educate everyone on the politically correct way to give an opinion? Or are
you here to give your opinion on the subject at hand and not the response of
others opinions?

I think what it boils down to is this:

Will Novell be here in 10 years?
Will Microsoft?

*shrug*
