] So why not extend e.g. fMSX or RuMSX (or whatever it is called these days)
] with Glide (3Dfx) support, so MSX games can become really 3D?
Nice idea but who do you think is going to make MSX programs that support all
these extensions? Even the moonsound and the graphix 9000 did not get much
support. Despite all the excitement there was around the introduction of
those extensions.
I think that if I want to use my 3DFX card, that it is a better idea to play
a native PC game like 'Shadows of the empire' from Lucasarts or 'Formula 1'
from psygnosis. At least, the pentium procesor programmed in native mode has
enough power to get everything out of the 3DFX chipset...
I agree with you that the current generation of emulators should be improved.
They should provide access to the filesystem of the pc in stead of only
access to filesystems on diskimages. In that respect, the CJS MSX emulator is
a very good example. It supports 'low level' access for diskimages and 'high
level' access for the native pc filesystem.
Another point of improvement for the emulators is the sound emulations. The
SCC and PSG are no problem for most emulators but the FM-Pac, the MSX-Audio
and the Moonsound emulation still is not really that good. The emulated
fm-devices still do not sound the same as the real fm-devices.
Yet another point of improvement is the emulation of the video digitize/super
impose capabilities of some MSX systems (like the Philips NMS 8280). This
could be done with videocapture cards and things like that.
And a last point of improvement for most emulators is the timing. The Z80
speed and the VDP speed still do not properly match, with as result that
music played on the interrupt sometimes goes too fast and sometimes too slow.
Even within one audio track of one game...
I think that emulator writers should first concentrate on emulating the most
common MSX hardware properly. That task is already hard enough in itself.
And by the time that the MSX hardware is finally really good emulated, we can
look at making an MSX3 or however you would like to call it in an emulator.
If there is anybody left to make any MSX3 specific programs by that time...
One last note to the emulator writers: please do not get me wrong. I think
that the current state of the emulators is already very good when you look at
all problems involved in emulating hardware really good. It's only that I
think it is better to first concentrate on getting the emulators as good as
possible before even thinking about emulating a non-existing MSX3 system...
Kind regards,
Alex
