Debugging messages are intended, although a less than ideal solution. If plink encounters a host key it doesn't recognize without debugging, it simply terminates without warning. Adding the verbose flag was a way to let users know what was going on. As far as I can tell, git gui does not get confused by these messages. - -- Edward Z.
