At this point I must say that I do not support the official Debian package of MPD because the Debian project has decided to ignore the bug fixes in MPD stable releases, and even the upcoming Wheezy release will ship only the old version 0.16 that is out of support. I think your story ends here, unless you decide to use the latest MPD release instead of Debian's outdated version.
