I'm not surprised my ideas attracted a host of 'no' emails, but I was
hoping someone would suggest a way forward.

Write a script that runs astyle, other tools, custom-written scripts, or any combination, and provide examples of its changes to the list. You'll attract more noes, but so what? The second coming of Jesus will attract noes, that's just the way it is. Have a look at http://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/0201616416?filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0

Once Kevin and other regular committers like the changes (which will take some iterations, yes it will), you run the script once on the main tip and add it or a reference to the mutt source code, so that patch contributors can check that their patches are good (stylistically).

You can't avoid that burden (assuming that the code will one day be
cleaned up). You can only postpone it.

You can always defer cleanups for another year. Sometimes it's even a good idea.
