I can second that.
I've had a mbox format mailbox that was 4G - 99% of which was a 
sparse file of all zeros.  (One of our admins pathologically 
configured our tcp wrappers.)

Mutt took forever to open, but it just dealt with it.

Procmail, on the other hand...
