Well, sounds like you're still in the editor. In the command mode
the vi editor will usually display "recording". It's certainly not
a Mutt message.
If you're indeed using vi, try :x<enter> to save the current text
and exit. After that you will be returned to Mutt's compose menu,
which is where you can use y to send the message (note, lower-case y
-- Mutt command keys are case sensitive).
