I'm kinda new at this myself, but maybe:
        bind    general d       "<copy-message>+trash" \
                                "Send Message to trash"


Don't know if it will work, but you could give it a shot!

in your ~/.muttrc file (if there isn't one make it) and then:
        set move=no
