I had to give that up even with a static IP address because my mail
was getting tossed out by various anti-spam heuristics.  Some servers
won't accept mail from a static, residential DSL address even if it
has an MX record that resolves correctly.

I didn't suggest that you use the email address at your isp.  I
suggested that when using your GMail address, you could use the GMail
SMTP server.  That would make the picky recipients happy.
