I've recently started trying to make mvpmc work on a MediaMVP H3 with
mvpmc 0.3.0 and, frankly, can't get it to run reliably. Any help
appreciated.

What I am trying to is shuffle play a playlist of ~3000 items (all
audio; mostly ogg, some mp3; TV output is not actually a requirement) as
a client of a NAS device (an Asus WL-HDD). I really don't want to have
to install an entire MythTV or similar. Indeed, if I were willing to go
that far (and assuming that I ran Windows), I'd simply use the vendor's
software rather than mvpmc.

I have had some WL-HDD specific problems (the web server is for admin
only and will not serve arbitrary content, the SMB server is SMB-only
(Samba 2.0), no CIFS, ...) so, at least until I get to a working
configuration I'm running with a desktop PC running Debian Sarge
instead. Even in that configuration, I'm having problems:

- When using http (Apache 2.0), the sound is very choppy. Peering at the
wire traffic is un-nerving; there's an awful lot of ZeroWindow, which is
a pretty blunt way of performing flow control for TCP; there are better
approaches...

- When using CIFS (Samba 3.0), the MediaMVP periodically wedges.

- When using NFS, the Media MVP periodically wedges. After several
iterations I noticed that, before wedging, it would play in starts,
perhaps 100ms of audio followed by 2s of silence. On the occasion that I
noticed this, I did manage to login and run ps, although it took 3-4
minutes to do so. I noticed about ten mvpmc processes running (why?) and
about fifteen mvpmc zombies (!!). It really did feel as though the
machine's CPU was saturating, but lacking the usual tools (no top, no
TIME column in ps's output), I was unable to diagnose why.

- I did see something about choppy MythTV output being the result of a
10Mb/s limit being exceeded. I'm not using MythTv, but just to be sure,
I placed a 10Mb/s hub (and nothing else) between the MediaMVP and
desktop PC. The same problems appeared to occur. (For comparison, there
is usually the 100Mb/s switch in a WRT56G in between the two devices.)

I'm running out of ideas here; have I missed something obvious?

- Raz
