The VLC code switches the height to 576 if you're set to PAL (which I
believe is the mvpmc default) - did you pass -m ntsc on the command line
in your dongle config, or choose NTSC under the Audio/Video settings?

Martin has suggested I use si.rows to interrogate the resolution of the
TV in future so I can ignore the PAL/NTSC setting.

You can verify the transcode string mvpmc is sending by telneting into
the mvpmc box (root/no pass) and doing cat /usr/share/mvpmc/connect.log,
so I'd have a look at that make sure it's sending what it should be.

It is. There's a bug in the current VLC releases that prevents the
length value being reported correctly by the stream. To get around this,
the movie interrogation functions in mvpmc for VLC work off percentages,
while the standard mvpmc ones work off timecode (hence the weird looking
time value).

This bug has been fixed in VLC now, but I'm going to hold off on
changing these parameters to use time correctly until a VLC build is a bit
more widely available (without it, you won't get the correct % position on
the bar) as it's still only in their svn.

Odd - the transcoding canvas should take care of that. If you're playing
with manual settings I'd experiment with setting the canvas to 720x480,
but make the height/width scaling slightly smaller to see if it helps
(use the VLC command line switches to set and use mvpmc manual VLC mode)

Not that it's any consolation but I have a few letterboxed movies at
similar resolution and they work fine on my TV in both PAL and NTSC
mode.

Robin
