The plot thickens!!! I had been using the "Throughput Test" in the menu that comes up in the filesystem lists. With version 0.3.3, this number is consistently between 8.5mb/s and 9.2mb/s. When I used your method, "time cat filename > /dev/null", I consistently received numbers in the 13.0-13.3mb/s.
Then I downgraded to 0.3.0 and got about 12mb/s with both methods. So, perhaps it's not an NFS problem after all, but something in the mvpmc application itself that's slowing things down. The file that I've been using for testing is the first 50 megs of the pilot episode of Entourage, ripped directly from DVD, including only the mp2 audio. 52,428,800 bytes in 47.6 seconds is 8.4mb/s. It's probably a vigorous buffer test because the throughput isn't smooth; it peaks at about 12mb/s and dips to about 4mb/s. I chose it because it *always* skips with 0.3.3, continuously throughout the entire show, even within 5s of pausing for the buffer to refill; and played perfectly on 0.3.0.
