After reading a number of slimdevices threads, I am convinced the 
default slimserver settings are what you want.  The only reason given to 
change them is to manage limited bandwidth problems between the server 
and the client.  So, in the end, slimserver should know the capabilities 
of each client and convert accordingly.  It should prefer using flac on 
clients capable of decoding the format.

Oh, and rest assured you are not the only person fiddling with the 
slimserver control to ensure flac is being used. The issue (and 
confusion) has popped up several times on the slimserver mail lists.
