I've been running software RAID1 and RAID5 on several of my volumes for a while now and haven't actively done anything to them, short of replacing a failed volume or two. > A few parties have mentioned Linux software RAID. Again, not necessarily. All you need is space to store the data while changing the configuration of the drives. If one of the drives can hold all the data you need (compressed or otherwise) you could degraded the array by removing one of the drives, move the data to it, and then wipe the other drives and build the new array and move your data/installation back. I've done this a few times to move an existing system either to or from RAID. -- Jamin W.
