Ok, this is weird. With logging on, the MVPMC isn't showing video 
stutter. The only time there is some occasional hesitation is if I jump 
forward, but I guess that's because it is necessary to flush the 
buffers.

Still odd though is that ifconfig shows loads of buffer overruns.
