Delving into the source code it looks like the 16:9auto option no longer does anything different from 16:9. In any case, using this option the TV steadfastly shows all video as 4:3 (in auto or 4:3 mode) or everything in 16:9 (in 16:9 mode) with no apparent means of getting the TV to switch automatically. It seems that there are two different ways of signalling aspect (via Scart pin 8 or WSS signalling data embedded in the picture - line 23 for PAL). It looks like mvpmc possibly only supports the latter, which may be the source of the issue.
