You are right. This is wrong (not designed) behavior on PPC which will
be fixed ASAP.

In MLO Due is the time when the task should be completed. You usually
need time to complete a task - this is why Start date is used. MLO
will show you the task the date which is specified in Start. I think
it is logical to show the task right away if Start is not specified.
