Problem solved! Changing the CurrentControlSet MySQL ImagePath from 'mysqld-opt' to 'mysqld' now brings up the correct (or rather, the expected) version.
On reflection, perhaps I didn't shut down MySQL before running the setup for the gamma version, and that is why it continued to use the older beta, though I thought I had. (FX: talks to self - 'must read the instructions *first* next time'). Thanks for your help, guys. Running the 'mysqld --version ' on the command line convinced me that I had actually installed it.....
