Hi , You did a confusion between root for mysql (wihich is SA or DBA group) and the root of the OS.
have you ever installed mysql in windows. there is a root user even in windows. What you must do is to ask the person who installed for the "Mysql root password" and check the users created in the database. If the root password haven't been set, do it and flush privileges.
