If this hasn't been answered yet, the PC speaker on/off switch is usually an option in your system BIOS. I had the same problem on my Dell PE 2550 dev server until I switched it in setup. The problem with cutting the cable is that some motherboards have the speaker built in... noooo wires. :-)
