What I did was beat my brains out on the same exact problem. In the end I have no clue what I did to get it actually working. I had re-installed the mysql from the .tar.gz, I installed all the RPM's several times. Everytime, I fully rebooted the system, and finally I have to run safe_mysqld --user=root
I think finaly I ran the tar -zxvf on the mysqlmax.<version>.tar.gz, rebooted the system, then re-ran safe_mysqld --user=root.
