If mysql.sock doesn't exist, that is because the server is not running. I fought the same battle as Mark and ultimately downloaded and installed the RPM for 3.23.49a from MySQL in place of the copy that came with RH. The MySQL RPM installed and came up just like it says in the book. Saves a lot of hair and dain bramage.
If the server process _is_ running, it may be useful to go through the section on binary installation and check those items to see if your RPM set everything up correctly.
