Ah, thanks for asking that -- I meant to include that in my original
description of the scenario, as it's another thing that's really odd about
the problem: there is NOTHING in the error logs at the time the problem
happens.

I've got a script running that checks the number of "visible" databases once
per minute. When the number falls below the number that there should be, the
script restarts mysqld. This is the same point -- when the "visible"
database count falls below what it should -- that the 1049 errors start
getting kicked out of other scripts (message boards, etc.).

I'm using a widely distributed binary for Mac OS X built by Marc Liyanage
... Version 3.23.49 with InnoDB support compiled in. I'm experienced with
MySQL, but haven't done much with InnoDB, and don't presently have a need. I
chose the binary install since Apple frequently runs behind on distributing
MySQL releases, and I didn't see the need to re-compile if there was a
decent binary available.

Is it possible that the inclusion of InnoDB support (that isn't used or
configured) could be a contributing factor to the problem? If that notion
makes no sense, I won't bother with re-compiling ... But if it's a remote
possibility, I can always compile my own version if it could eliminate the
trouble.

Thanks for the input, Mark -- I appreciate it.

-Clay
