I was experencing the same problem in two different mysql setups....
the first one is runing 3.23.36. the problem started after an up2date
with red hat.....

Then i seted up a nother machine runing red hat 8 with mysql 5.23.53..
and the i found the same problemm......

Early this morning i found a previous reply to question.... here was
the solution......... i just needed to add the hosts where i'm
connecting from to the /etc/hosts file....

I wonder why? but it works....... somewhere wlse i found like a tch
