Newbie: interfacing to MySQL?

Hi all,

Brand new to these parts so go easy on me! :)

Right - I want to use MySQL - but doing things backward. What are you people using as a front end?

I mean MySQL just sits in the background churning out stuff - but obviously the instructions have to come from somewhere.

Someone suggested using Java (I want to use this using a browser over my intranet) but Java seems pretty tricky.

Sorry if this is a "how-long-is-a-piece-of-string" type questions. If you need more detail just ask.
