See, I cannot believe that. As a new tech I find I am VERY thirsty to learn more, more, more!!! This only makes me a better nail tech and I want to be the best :) It just baffles me that other new techs do not want to learn everything they can. Ah well. I will learn and grow and have the busy books! Boy Sheryl,,,, This should be posted in every shop coast to coast...The part about investing in yourself is priceless. I have worked for people that have had NO continuing ed in 15 years ...they learned what they needed to know in school<LOL>and I was wasting my time and money....classes are crap etc...etc.....but they were sure interested in what knowledge, or tequniques, or "new toys" I brought back... uh.....NO....MINE !!! and I began to not play so well with others. At least not share well. And my book is full and busy. And I do a lot of fun things that none of the others do. You have said a mouthful.. Very well I might add. I am writing this for Employees as well as Independents . But it is mostly directed at Newer Techs. For the Old Timers on this list it is Common Sense. For the newer techs it might be information you need. EXAMPLE As we are incorporating this New Gel Polish Service into our Salon, I am supplying the lights, and many of the Gels. We have a part time girl who is Very Excited about the New Service as well. She has come back to nails after an absence. One of the owners wants her to learn this new procedure as well as AC. F I am more than willing to take My Time and Expertise as an Educator in this industry to teach20this woman what she would normally have to pay for. Why? Because I am training my Work Partner. I want her to live up to Industry Standards at LEAST. GETTING TO THE POINT She expects to use MY equipment. NOT happening. For many reasons, but the REAL Point is THIS; IF you are not willing to invest in Yourself why should I invest My Time in You?! I have told her she needs her own light to be able to take home and practice. How are you going to develop that talent if you do not practice? Practice on Friends, Family, or baby sitters. Practicing on clients is a Good way to Loose Clients! You don’t put yourself on the menu unless you can fill the order. I am not getting out of my chair for you to practice, I have clients to do, and I “don’t share well with others.” I have been burned too many times. The owners want her to learn AC as well. She wants to work with an E file. She is going to have to buy a Used E file. She won’ spend the money. There is Disclaimer Page in the KUPA 8 hour hands on Certification class (which we sometimes provide e files for) that I LOVE. Taking this class does NOT Guarantee you are will become a Master with the Electric File. This means I can give you the benefit of all the Best Education in the world. BUT if you don’t have an E File ( or uv light or what ever tool is necessary) and practice with all that knowledge I have provided………. YOU get No Where! This is an Industry in which you have to invest in yourself. If you are not willing to invest in yourself why should anyone else? Why do you think most Salon Owners are not willing to pay for Education? NO Follow Through! The OTHER reason to have your Own Equipment? When things don’t work out can pick up your toys and go home. Meaning you can go anywhere and give the same services and your clients can follow with No Interruption in Services! What if the New Salon doesn’t have UV lights? Supplying Specialty Equipment for yourself also means you can ask for a bigger % of the service. It means you work with the tools that are Right For You and not just what the Salon is willing to provide. I am fortunate because My Owners understand this. Unless this person is willing to invest in herself there is no reason for long &nb sp;FREE training sessions. She could take all the money she is saving on Education and invest it in her tools. Not Happening. This means she will not be doing any of these services. So Please those of you who are newer and still growing your list of services give this some serious thought. Yes times are tight, but if you don’t diversify and invest in yourself they will only get tighter as your options dwindle. For All Educators this is a Frustrating Situation. I hope this will be helpful to some of our Newer Techs.
