A dear friend who does family and drug & alcohol counseling once advised us:
Any action that is acknowledged will continue.. good bad or otherwise,
acknowledge the action and it will continue.. 
This thought process works with both children and adults in almost every
case you can think of
I have had ONLY one person that it backfired.. ignore her bad behavior and
she just got worse.. but eventually she did just go away :)

My own personal mantra will add: responding opens the door for a rebuttal..
in other words.. just don't answer.. anything you answer with just is an
open invitation to continue the discussion/argument

I'd like to add Maggie that one of the ways I combat negativity and "drama"
people is just not to engage them.  I put a "positive" bubble around me and
turn lemons into lemonade.  Its difficult at first but many times the
negative people respond in a positive way.  But even if they don't, YOU are
happier and other people (in this case clients and co-workers) see your
positive attitude and are drawn to you. Win, win for you.

Maggie, I read gobs of stuff on the subject of negative personalities 
years ago, because of a situation I was in.  And one thing that stuck 
in my head was negative personalities control you.  If they can 
change the way you feel about something, then they are controlling 
you.  If you don't accept their negative "issues" then they are not 
controlling you and in return you are still positive.  Basically, do 
not accept being  controlled.

On that note, better said than done.  Have to say, that I have 
stopped the negative around me in certain circumstances with 
remembering this theory.  But in reality, if you have so much around 
you, can't get away from it!!!!

These type of people have miserable lives, not just negative in the 
working atmosphere, but at home too, and Gawd help the poor waitress 
if they screw up!!!!I think in your case these people are blaming the 
salon owner for their whole lives because they can't take 
responsibility.  And it won't change.  I think it is HARD to find a 
salon without the negative personalities, like Lynnette said. I have 
a great salon, we have one negative person, but Lordy Be, don't have 
to work with her all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!! JMHO  diana from indiana
