Here is the problem I have with the 16 deaths per day video http://16deathsperday.com/?akid=1174.559591.mJU0Vu <http://16deathsperday.com/?akid=1174.559591.mJU0Vu&rd=1&t=2> &rd=1&t=2
The chemicals they have a problem with are associated with nail polish. However when they are talking about those they are showing cuticle oil, cuticle remover and lotion. They are insinuating that the three "toxic" chemicals are found in most salon products, when in fact the opposite is true. Most manufacturers removed the suspect chemicals years ago. The industry is actually very good about taking action by removing chemicals that are perceived or shown to be harmful. In addition the video claims that formaldehyde is used as a disinfectant. While it is available to be used as a disinfectant, it is very uncommon and it is not recommended for use in a salon. So anyone that is using it is not following industry recommendations. Plus there are already federal guidelines in place for using formaldehyde. Anyone that has read a nail textbook knows it says formaldehyde is not safe for salon use. (Page 111 if you are interested in looking it up.) Also you need to remember the reason they have the video posted in the first place is because they are raising money. The video is designed to compel you to action. To support their cause they are taking interviews from a few people. If you have ever watched a TV infomercial, you know that people will say just about anything when the camera is rolling. I don't dispute that the people may have gotten sick, but there was no study done to link it to the salon environment. They could have all eaten the same food, ridden on the same bus, lived in the same area, drank the same water etc. Their position on nail salons is not supported on their website by any evidence. If they do have any evidence, they are not sharing it on their website. All of the products they showed were generic products with the exception of the disinfectant. Which by the way does not contain any formaldehyde. The real problem as I see it is this: 1. Purchasing the wrong discount products from the wrong discount distributors. 2. Purchasing products made in other countries that don't have the same regulations that we do in the US, Canada, UK etc. 3. Purchasing bad generic products. (not all of them are bad) 4. Not following the manufacturer's instructions. 5. Not following the rules and regulations that are already in place. 6. Lack of education or not following the education that has been given. People work with plutonium all day long and have no ill health effects at all, because they follow the rules. Nail techs are taught the rules, they are taught the law, but some of them refuse to follow it. I will kiss you square on the mouth if you can prove that the people on the video followed the rules. With that said, I have no doubt that some people are being exploited. I can't speak for every industry, but the laws the video calls for are already in place in the salon industry.
