It can be. As far as the expense goes, I guess if you feel that it's worth it to be notified of major events that are preventing your network from emailing you the alert or you viewing them remotely is strictly "YMMV". This economy is unlike dot com blowout of 2001. Then, we didn't see "much" convergence of services to the net. Now, I think we are seeing a fairly healthy amount of convergence push forward. That includes SMS. Fairly soon, I suspect that nothing will be untouched by the sucess or failure of Internet networking. This thread, if continued, would probably be a good for the main list since we're talking about messaging/alerting methods and realities now more so than the future of the list, methinks.
