About shorting the circuit through the coil.. The power supply is an old PC supply, and it does have a short circuit protection. At some point before the circuit failed, I noticed the slower fan speed of the PC supply, which usually happens when it tries to provide max amperage (15A at 12V). So maybe the circuit really did shorted through the coil, but the supply didn't detect it as a true short because of the tiny resistance in the coil, which is apparently enough for this to happen.
