Although I've never seen them used in a clock, I use the Russian IN-3
neon bulb in many of my projects. This bulb has a filament unlike
others and allows the same bright illumination on DC or AC! The bulbs
are a bit on the large side and they really need to be "aged" well for
good results. I've seen many that flicker and sputter but they are
cheap so get a bunch to play around with.
