Another way to remove the red coating is to rub on some adhesive tape
and then just lift it off. No water and no heat involved that might
damage the tubes. It should be possible to remove just the front sida
coating, but it will look a little bit strange.

Another way that works on some tubes, f.ex. ZM1210, is to wipe them
with a tissue soaked with acetone. If done quickly the printing may
remain on those tubes, but it does not work on other.

There seems to be many kinds of coating. Some tubes has a film shrunk
around them, other has a thin coating as a layer the tape can lift,
f.ex ZM 57?. Other seems to be painted with a dye, f.ex. the 1210.
