If you do consider remote control, I would like to suggest you use an 
ESP8266 module, like the ESP-01.
These are very inexpensive($2), are plug and play(from a hardware 
perspective) run wifi, and can be loaded with an Arduino bootloader thereby 
allowing anyone to easily modify it.
The other 'radio' technologies are very proprietary and in my opinion have 
now been supplanted by this ioT technology.
