If you only need effects returns, why not something like an Alesis
MultiMix 8 Line (or a multitude of other line mixers). Single rack
space, 8 stereo line inputs to stereo outs, simple operation and
integration, low cost. Buy two!

Thanks so much for the recommendations. About the Soundcraft 200
series-- what's the difference between the "b" the "bve" and the
"sr". They look like the same input module to me, but I have only
worked on Soundcraft and it was a Ghost.
The Midas Venice is a bit out of my range, pricewise.
