No, you can use the 1e for everything including vocals & O.H. The 1e stacks really well. It just ended up this way for me having 22 - series 1e strips & 2 -series 1 strips. I ended up modifying the series 1 strips cause I always felt the series 1 module were a bit more brittle/harsh sounding compared to the series 1e module. So when I had the tech modify the series 1 strips it really made them more useable. I record into a computer harsh preamps don't go well with software recording. When the neoteks were made in the early 80s they were tracking to tape. So maybe they were cleaning up the mixes really well dealing with tape machines and all. This might be why neotek held their own with consoles that cost alot more. The eq is great people call them very musical. What I get from that term is low phase, frequency bands not fighting each other. If you look at the strip itself there's not alot to it. The series 1e is a very honest module. What you put in is what you get out bent to your liking because you have the control of the eq. There's no output transformers. If I want a different sound i use a different mic. I use my console as a front end with light eq on the way in. I use logic pro basically as a tape machine to capture the sound. I do a little editing and use very little plug ins. Then when I have the whole band tracked I come out of the computer and mixdown through the neotek using the summing of my 2-mix/sub channels. I only own 1 outboard compressor and 1 outboard levelor. I use the levelor on sub1&2 for my drums all the time. "its awesome". The comp i use on my main vocals most of the time. My system is an Apogee Symphony System with the Apogee AD/DA16x converters. I monitor through Genelec 8050s. I don't feel the need to add anything else to my set up. Hope this helps.

The top pot is ratio and the bottom is output make up gain. The toggle is a true by-pass. They are extremely smooth. Just butter on vocals and overheads on the way in. You can really smash with them but I use them very lightly just to add that little goodness. The eq setting you see here is my overheads on the way in for my current project. I shape on the way in and cut on mixdown as needed. I only really use these series 1 channels for O.H. & vox everything else goes through the series 1e strips. These sound good on everything but I have all my channels dedicated per instrument with the eq in a good starting range. Great for workflow. I have owned Api 512c, Avedis ma5, BAE 312&1272, trident, Avalon, and many other preamp & eq combo's and all are really good. My favorite to this day is the series 1e preamp/eq. I specifically remember tracking bands using other pre's and during mixdown thinking damn I really wish I just used the neotek console. I ended up selling all my high end pre's and invested the money in a complete overhaul of my console. I do not regret it.
